Summary
Pison has partnered with Timex to integrate its AI-powered neural sensor technology into select Timex smartwatches, enabling neurocognitive tracking of sleep, stress, fatigue, and anxiety, as well as other use cases. This collaboration also includes plans to develop next-generation neurocognitive wearables. Pison’s sensor technology, miniaturized with the help of STMicroelectronics, will allow wrist-worn devices to measure brain activity, providing actionable insights for mental health, athletic performance, and workforce safety. The announcement follows a recent investment in Pison by Samsung Ventures, positioning the company to expand its offerings in neurocognitive tracking.
Key Takeaways
- Timex Partnership with Pison: Timex will integrate Pison’s neural sensors into select smartwatches, enabling advanced neurocognitive tracking of sleep, stress, fatigue, and anxiety.
- Sensor Miniaturization and Collaboration: Pison collaborated with STMicroelectronics to reduce sensor size and cost, making it compatible with consumer wearables and integrated into Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 platform.
- Focus on Neurocognitive Health: The technology will support applications in mental health, athletic performance, workforce safety, and brain health, including potential detection of neurodegenerative conditions.
Pison, a developer of AI-powered neural sensors for neurocognitive health, wellness, and gesture control, has begun licensing its neural sensor that enables neurocognitive tracking of sleep, stress, anxiety, and fatigue levels to smartwatch and wearable brand Timex.
The company worked with STMicroelectronics, a semiconductor provider serving customers across the spectrum of electronics applications, to miniaturize and reduce the cost of the sensor to fit in a consumer watch form factor. Pison is now licensing brand original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original design manufacturers (ODMs) to integrate STMicroelectronics’ electroneurography-enabled biosensor chips and Pison’s natural language gesture control stack into their watches and wearables.
“Pison’s electroneurography technology offers a major leap forward for wearables. Its ability to accurately measure brain activity from a wrist-worn wearable opens up a whole new class of applications and usage models,” says Marco Angelici, vice president of marketing and applications for analog and MEMS at STMicroelectronics, in a release. “We’re excited to collaborate with Pison to bring this cutting-edge technology to market and echo their vision to become ubiquitous in a new generation of smartwatches and athletic wearables.”
STMicroelectronics and Pison worked together to integrate the company’s core sensor library into Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 platform. Pison now operates as an authorized independent software vendor enabling watch OEMs and ODMs in the Snapdragon ecosystem.
In related news, Pison announced last week that Samsung Ventures has invested in an active equity round. Pison is now poised and fully funded to launch a new generation of mental health, wellness, and performance apps with subscription services that make use of this neural sensor.
Timex Collaborates With Pison
“We’re thrilled to collaborate with Pison on integrating their groundbreaking neural sensor technology into our products,” said Marco Zambianchi, president of Timex, in a release. “At Timex, our commitment is to deliver exceptional, innovative wearables that enhance the lives of consumers worldwide. This partnership allows us to redefine the boundaries of what’s possible in the smartwatch and wearable space, offering unparalleled functionality and value to our customers.”
Timex plans to develop the next generation of neurocognitive wearable devices with Pison. In addition, a variety of Timex-branded devices “powered by Pison” will start to be rolled out to commercial marketplaces and consumers in the spring.
“We’re proud to work with industry leaders to bring a game-changing sensor to market with potential for profound societal benefit,” says John Croteau, CEO of Pison, in a release. “Pison’s mobile apps and subscription services have the potential to transform cognitive performance and productivity at home, on the playing field, in the workplace, and in mission-critical job functions.”
Pison apps and electroneurography-enabled smartwatches address a range of needs, including:
- Mental Health and Wellness: Neural sensing in smartwatches will be part of a holistic effort to address the worldwide mental health crisis. Pison’s technology enables neurocognitive tracking of sleep, stress, anxiety, and fatigue levels, providing everyone from adolescents to seniors with actionable insights to improve their overall well-being.
- Athletic Excellence: On-field performance is tied to mental preparation. Coaches, trainers, and analytics teams will be able to predict in-game performance from daily cognitive assessments. Players receive data-driven insights into their cognitive abilities, potentially enabling them to train smarter and optimize their lifestyle for peak athletic performance.
- Workforce Safety: Pison’s sensor assesses neurocognitive readiness, impairment, and fitness-for-duty, helping pinpoint pilots, truck drivers, and equipment operators at risk of accidents, injuries, or fatalities.
- Neurological Health: Pison’s sensor can detect abnormalities in neurological signals and is undergoing medical trials as an early detection method for monitoring and managing neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s.
- Brain Health: Pison says its sensor can help prevent long-term brain damage in contact sports and the military by detecting and helping mitigate the effects of repeated subconcussive impacts to the head.
- Natural Language Gesture Control: Pison’s sensor builds on multimodal large language model AI and accessibility gestures like the double-pinch in popular smartwatches, adding finger primitives. This enables your smartwatch to control smart home devices, mobile devices, and AR glasses through intuitive finger gestures like point-to-select, thumbs up, and swipe-to-dismiss.
